Fabricator Profile: Solid Surfaces Inc. Stays on the Cutting Edge

Posted on 27 January 2017 by CRadmin3

Screen-Shot-2016-01-12-at-8.17.12-AMSolid Surfaces Inc. was one of the first solid-surface fabricators to automate its shop, and the company takes pride in staying on the cutting edge of surface materials and fabrication processes. After updating the business’s software, Mitch Makowski, president of Solid Surfaces Inc., found that he and his team could communicate more efficiently, which streamlined the entire fabrication process.

To keep Solid Surfaces Inc. at the forefront of technology, the company formed a partnership with DuPont to field test new processes for fabricators, and the technicians at Solid Surfaces have been able to provide feedback that has helped shape and refine these techniques.

For the last 30 years, Solid Surfaces Inc. has been headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., and today, the original shop is accompanied by a sister facility in Buffalo with a separate division, Florida Surfaces LLC, located in Orlando. The company is accredited by the Marble Institute of America (MIA) and is a member of The Artisan Group.

Colt Industries Press Conference Announcing Split with Dupont Corian Solid Surface and Zodiaq Quartz

Posted on 22 December 2015 by cradmin

Back on December 8, Colt Industries, formerly one of the largest distributors of DuPont Corian solid surface and Zodiaq quartz surfacing held a webinar-based press conference announcing the reasons for their move away from DuPont products to the lesser-known Durasein solid surface from China and Diresco quartz surfacing from Belgium. The captured the video conference, which included explanations as well as a question and answer portion. Here it is in its entirety:

DuPont and Dow Announce Merger Deal, Ramifications for Surfacing Unknown

Posted on 15 December 2015 by cradmin

dupont-dow mergerOn December 11, DuPont and Dow announced they have agreed on a merger, valued at $130 billion. After the merger, the new company monikered “DowDuPont,” plans to split into three separate companies within 18 months to two years after the deal closes. DuPont has said it plans to cut 5,000 employees, assuming the deal is approved by regulators, stock holders and board members. The chemical giants have a variety of overlapping products, but in the countertop/surfacing field only DuPont is a player with its Corian solid surface and Zodiaq quartz surfacing products.

Interestingly DuPont’s surfacing line appears to have recently taken a hit when one of it’s largest distributors that covered 17 states, Colt Industries, announced it was parting ways with the DuPont and would no longer be distributing Corian or Zodiaq surfaces. This merger and the potential synergies or chaos, depending on whether or not the building products division is something that receives additional attention or loses focus, is another unpredictable factor tossed in. Certainly as additional details become available, this media outlet will continue to bring you information.

Colt Industries Parts Ways with DuPont Corian Solid Surface and Zodiaq Quartz

Posted on 09 December 2015 by cradmin

Colt Industries held a live via the Internet press conference on Dec. 8, announcing that it had cut ties with DuPont regarding distribution of Corian solid surface and Zodiaq quartz surfacing. It is unsure how this major shake-up in the solid surface and quartz industry will play out, but Colt is one of DuPont’s largest surfacing distributors, covering 17 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennesee, Texas and Southern Illinois. In place of DuPont’s surfacing products, Colt will now be distributing Diresco Quartz Surfacing, manufactured in Belgium, and Durasein 100 percent acrylic solid surface. Additionally, it will distribute GlueBoss SeamBoss and ClipBoss adhesives in place of DuPont’s.

According to the company, the change was made so the company could offer products of the same quality but at better pricing with faster turnaround on custom color orders. Diresco Quartz has already been stocked in Colt’s facilities and the company expects to have solid surface stocked by the beginning of the new year. The company also reports that the new materials will come in many similar colors as what it previous carried.

DuPont Expands DeepColor Corian Solid Surface Series to Include Browns

Corian DeepColor Deep Storm

Corian Deep Storm, one of the new colors in the brown DeepColor series available in Europe

Earlier this year DuPont finally launched its line of DeepColor Corian solid surface after teasing it for more than a year. Billed by the company as “deeper, darker, more lustrous and durable,” the idea behind the patent-pending DeepColor technoogy was to deliver greater depth of color and improved durability over regular dark colors of Corian solid surface. When scratched, the appearance of the scratch was reduced by 50 percent, according to the company, and it better resisted whitening cause by impacts. The series originally contained four black-based colors:  Deep Anthracite, Deep Nocturne, Deep Night Sky and Deep Black Quartz. However, the company has apparently perfected the use of this technology in dark brown hues, as according to the DuPont website, it is offering six new “Deep Brown” colors in Europe: Deep Mink, Deep Bedrock, Deep Sable, Deep Storm (pictured here), Deep Espresso and Deep Caviar.

It remains to be seen when or if these Deep Browns will be made available in North America.

Wireless Recharging Built into DuPont Corian Solid Surface

Posted on 26 February 2014 by cradmin

Here’s a cool video that features the technology DuPont is working on for its Corian solid surface that it was showcasing at the recent Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas.

DuPont has joined the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and is working with other PMA members on wireless charging solutions for smartphones and tablets that can be effectively integrated into solid surface tops. Right now this charging technology requires an adapter to be plugged into most phones, but newer smartphones will have the receptors built-in.

The video is not from KBIS, but another show, and gives an idea of how the technology works. It is a bit promotional, but it is such an interesting development, we thought it was worth posting.

Old Corian Video Showing the Manufacture of Solid Surface

Posted on 26 September 2013 by cradmin

We looked long and hard to try to find a video that shows how solid surface is made, however it seems the industry is relatively tight-lipped about the process. Other than a few Chinese videos with no narrative showing minor aspects of manufacturing, there is very little out there. However, this “How it is Made” video from what appears to be the early 1980s has some interviews with the folks behind DuPont Corian solid surface as well as some insightful views at the company’s continuous casting manufacturing line. While it may be outdated a bit, you will get the idea. Thanks to Willis Distribution for sharing it.

If nothing else, the aged nature of it is good for a few chuckles. Enjoy:

The new colors of Zodiaq are as follows: Snow Flurry, with intricate flecks that combine with whites and grays; Coarse Carrara (pictured here), with frosted grays in bright white with scattered veining; and Coarse Marfil, with an organic effect veining in light cream and coffee tones.
