Performance of Laminam Ceramic Compact Surface

Posted on 17 January 2017 by cradmin

While this video, produced by Laminam, starts off looking like a commercial for a restaurant with a chef making pasta and such, it soon becomes apparent it is a demonstration of how the company’s ceramic compact material performs under heavy use conditions. The material is subject to cutting and chopping, oil and acidic materials poured directly on it, liquids that are commonly known to stain, etc. After this, it is simply wiped clean and appears to have no damage.

Laminam is along the lines of Dekton or Neolith compact materials, but it has been said it is “tension free” meaning no relief cuts need be made in it when fabricating.

We’d love to hear your experiences using this product. Post a response to this video below or drop us a line.

A Video Look at Fabricating Compact Surfaces

Posted on 23 December 2016 by cradmin

This video, produced and offered by Neolith by TheSize, takes a relatively deep look at fabricating ultra-compact/compact surfaces. It discusses the types of equipment that can be used, as well as the blades and tooling required. This information includes CNC machining, waterjet cutting and even the use of hand tools, addressing both wet and dry cutting. It also touches on adhesive qualities needed for installation (including interior versus exterior applications).

It also explains the cutting speeds (both feed speeds and RPM for blades) allowed for different types of cuts and equipment. It discusses making relief cuts when necessary. Support systems for use when cutting or performing other tasks are also touched upon, as well as material handling methods.

Other areas examined are finishing, polishing, edging, sink cut-outs and mounting, among other things.

Of course, the video is specifically referencing the Neolith compact surface product, but the information should be in the ball park for other materials, although manufacturer recommendations should certainly be followed in all cases.

Cosentino Launches 3 Online Design Tools for Better Surface Visualization

Posted on 14 April 2015 by cradmin

Cosentino launched three new online tools: a Digital Warehouse that gives fabricators an online library of slabs that can be previewed with clients and  the HD Home Viewer and the 3D Home Simulator, which allow the digital customization of a variety of environments by manipulating the various design elements.

Powered by SlabSmith software, the Digital Warehouse allows fabricators and specifiers to directly order a specific slab of granite or marble online by accessing images and providing measurements of each slab. It also autocorrects images for distortions and lighting and notes imperfections. Users can filter by size or application requirements to ensure material consistency and minimized waste in fabrication. Slabs can be applied to kitchen layout templates to create installation previews. By viewing the slab’s patterns and veining placing seams, appliances or fixtures can be determined before ordering. Right now it is only available for the company’s natural stone products.

The other two tools are for designers and homeowners. The Cosentino 3D Home simulator, for iPads, allows users to customize six environmental elements, including a modern, classic and outdoor kitchen, two bathrooms and an exterior space where Dekton may be applied to the façade. It provides multiple viewing angles and lighting scenarios, as well as 3-D movement and camera zoom capabilities. Designs can be saved in a library for editing or sharing. It’s available through the iTunes app store. The Cosentino HD Home Viewer is a multiplatform simulator with high-definition renderings of six spaces, including kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor and retail environments that can incorporate applications of Dekton. The user customizes surfaces by clicking on countertops, façades, wall coverings, floors, furniture and bathroom elements. It is intended for use on computers and Android, iOS and Windows tablets, smartphones and smart televisions.

Dekton Aura bookmatched

New Dekton Aura bookmatched

Dekton by Cosentino, an ultra-compact sintered surface made from glass, porcelain and quartz that hit the U.S. market in 2014, now has five additional colors to choose from. The first new color introductions since the launch of the material, which is suitable for both interior and exterior uses, including countertops, vanities, wet walls/showers, flooring and cladding, now comes in a total of 15 colors and patterns. The flagship color in the new launch is the company’s Aura product, which has the look of Calcatta marble, with large-scale grey veining on a white background. Calcatta marble and products that mimic the material is showing an increase in design interest in the U.S. market, states the company. And the claim is backed up by a variety of other products that have recently come out or are being released now. Additionally, for the first time, the Aura pattern repeats symmetrically, making bookmatching a possibility with the product (see photo).

In additiono to the Aura color, the other new hues are Edora, Irok, Kairos and Vegha. Edora is uniform in neutral color but has some delicate undulating textures for a natural look. Irok has thin, delicate veining and subtle moment with creamy tones that give it a limestone appearance. Kairos is another marble-like variant that has a soft white background and pale grey striations that create a look of Italian Carrera marble. Lastly, Vegha is a “stormy” yet neutral taupe, inspired b the formations of limestone and sandstone.

Dekton is made using a proprietary process called “particle sintering technology” or PST that uses heat and pressure to provide the material with UV resistance for color stability, high strength, and resistance to impacts, scratching and abrasion, as well as low water absorption and thermal shock resistance.

The new colors will be available in large format slabs of 56 by 126 in. and in three thicknesses: 0.8cm, 1.2cm and 2cm.

Dekton Ultracompact Sintered Surface Performance Tests

Posted on 10 June 2014 by cradmin

There has been a lot of interest shown in the new Dekton ultracompact sintered surfacing product introduced by Cosentino back in December, so when we ran across this video showing some “performance tests” on the new material, it caught our interest. While this video, which is admittedly put out by Cosentino, is obviously meant to put the material in a good light, it does show the Dekton material being subjected to some rather harsh treatment, including having a torch put to it, scratching, spray painting and setting a hot pan on the surface. And, the material seems to hold up pretty good. But don’t take my word for it, see it for yourself, and let us know what you think.

And feel free to suggest we post a video you have made or come across by sending us a link at info@countertopresource.com.
